Fencing, often referred to as Olympic fencing, is a dynamic and highly skilled sport that involves two competitors dueling with ‘rapier-style’ swords. The objective is to score points by making contact with the opponent, showcasing agility, strategy, and precision. Emerging in the late 19th century, modern fencing evolved from traditional swordsmanship techniques. The Italian school laid the groundwork by modifying historical European martial arts, which the French school later refined, establishing the foundation of contemporary fencing.

There are three main forms of modern fencing, each distinguished by its unique weapon and set of rules:
- Foil: A lightweight weapon with a flexible blade, the foil is used for thrusting attacks. Points are scored by hitting the opponent’s torso, and the use of proper fencing techniques and strategy is crucial.
- Épée: This is a heavier sword designed for thrusting, and points can be scored anywhere on the opponent’s body. The épée emphasizes both offensive and defensive strategies, as fencers must be ready to defend themselves while attacking.
- Sabre: A cutting and thrusting weapon, the sabre is used primarily for slashing attacks. Points are scored by hitting the opponent above the waist, and speed and tactical movement are key components of successful sabre fencing.
Fencing has been a staple of the modern Olympic Games since their inception, being one of only five sports featured in every edition, alongside athletics, cycling, swimming, and gymnastics. This sport not only develops physical fitness but also enhances mental agility, focus, and discipline.
