Taekwondo is a dynamic and powerful martial art originating from Korea, known for its high-energy kicks, fast-paced movements, and a focus on discipline and respect. Developed in the 1940s and 1950s by skilled Korean martial artists, Taekwondo draws influences from various martial arts, including karate, Chinese martial arts, and traditional Korean styles such as Taekkyon and Subak.
Governing Bodies and History
The Korea Taekwondo Association (KTA), established in 1959, was the first governing body for Taekwondo, formed through the collaboration of the nine original kwans (martial arts schools) in Korea. Today, Taekwondo is regulated globally by major organizations, including the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF), founded in 1966, and the partnership of the Kukkiwon and World Taekwondo (WT), established in 1972 and 1973 respectively.
