The batting team’s first objective is to have a player safely reach first base. Once a player reaches first base without being called “out,” they can attempt to advance to subsequent bases as their teammates take their turns at bat. The fielding team works diligently to prevent runs by getting batters or runners “out,” forcing them out of the play. The teams alternate between batting and fielding, with the batting team’s turn ending after the fielding team records three outs. An inning consists of one turn at bat for each team, and a standard game is typically composed of nine innings. In the event of a tie at the end of nine innings, extra innings are played. Notably, baseball is unique in that there is no game clock, although most games conclude after the ninth inning.
