Types of Competitions

  1. Local Competitions:

    • Open Competitions: Events that welcome participants from various clubs and training centers, providing opportunities for athletes to gain experience.
  2. Regional Competitions:

    • Qualifier Events: These competitions serve as qualifying rounds for national-level events, allowing athletes to secure their spots based on performance.
  3. National Competitions:
    • National Championships: Prestigious events that showcase the top lifters from across the country, often featuring various weight classes and divisions.
    • Open Nationals: Inclusive competitions that allow both seasoned lifters and newcomers to compete at a national level.
  4. International Competitions:
    • International Championships: Events that attract elite lifters from around the globe, showcasing the highest level of competition in weightlifting.
    • World Championships and Olympic Qualifiers: Major competitions that determine athletes’ qualifications for the Olympics and other prestigious international events.

Competition Structure

  • Categories: Competitions are typically divided into weight classes to ensure fair competition among athletes of similar sizes.
  • Lifts: Competitors perform two types of lifts—the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk. Athletes have a set number of attempts to achieve their best weight in each lift.
  • Scoring: The total weight lifted in both categories is combined to determine the overall winner in each weight class. Tiebreakers are decided based on the lighter athlete’s body weight.
